Hamish would have described his academic achievements at Cranleigh as 'unremarkable'. He met his lifelong friend David Calcutt here. He did lots of music and avoided sport (as much as possible). He did perform a leading comedic role, his only journey onto the stage, but one for which he received praise in the local paper. "The most amusing character was undoubtedly GHH Preston as the fussing, ridiculous Mrs Hardcastle. He took advantage of the opportunities offered and was a constant source of amusement."
